Keeping Up with Interior Design Trends
How to Follow Ever-Changing Desires
By Timothy Rea

Staying on top of today’s interior design trends can pose a difficult task.  At times, it may seem that the nation’s trends and design interests change so quickly that it is futile to undertake this daunting assignment.  However, if you know what to look for ahead of the ever-changing tastes of the public, staying aware of what is influencing the trends, you’ll find it much easier to stay in touch with what is popular.

For instance, knowing the "mood" of the nation as a whole can lead you to draw some basic conclusions as to what will be the most common requests for interior design trends.  Currently, we are seeing the appreciation of the family home due to the natural disasters that have destroyed so many in the past two or three years.  The basis of the interior design schemes has shifted to accent the family environment, making a home feel warm and friendly.  Safety and security are the senses that people are looking for in the colors and designs that they use in their homes.  These ideas lead to fewer bright and showy colors and more muted, earthy tones.

Also, with the trend in the economy, fewer people are interested in complete redesigns of their home.  Though many want to update for a fresh, contemporary interior to their home, rising oil prices and the need to conserve money and resources is leading to a trend of renewing older furnishings.  Instead of replacing furniture, many are simply choosing to update it.  For example, a recovering of an older couch and loveseat with a new color and textured material may be more cost effective and just as much of a change to the interior theme of the house as making a purchase.

Giving the house an atmosphere or "aura" is more desired these days.  More and more frequently, Chinese and Japanese influences are affecting the desires in interior design trends.  "Feng shui" is one of the most popular decorative styles to be requested inside a home, and in the muted tones of the more sophisticated design trends, the Asian orange-reds are the most well-received accent colors.

On the flip side of the coin, when the economic trends are different (lower prices, higher rates of appreciation, and higher returns on investment), and the nation feels more secure (no wars or natural disasters making the world outside the home to be unsafe), the trends tend to be the opposite.  People are more willing to spend larger sums of money on their interior design concepts, and often, they are looking for fewer clean lines.  They want a more ornate, showy design theme, with brighter colors to attract more attention.  They are home less often and want to interpret the sense of the room as one of "living for the moment", full of excitement.  This leads to less delicate, contemporary fashions and moves more in the direction of antiques and large, curvy furnishings.

The home is a haven to all, and it is important to know what a person or family will desire in the way of comfort and atmosphere within their own home.  Overall, there are many outside influences on the trends in interior design.  If you know what to look for mood, economy, and state of national security being among the top inspirations then it will make your job much simpler in attempting to keep up with the ever evolving needs and wants of the nation.
